Finding Your Safe Place


Once you have established your safe place you can connect with it effortlessly anytime you need to.

Begin by sitting or lying in a quiet space and recall a place where you were totally happy and safe. In this place no one can get to you, it’s your special place. If you cannot recall a real place, create your own. That’s what I did. Whether it is real or created, you want to create a way to get there in your mind’s eye.

Create a tunnel or secret forest to go through… only you know how to get there. Go through every detail in your mind’s eye… spend time here, explore every aspect of it… what does it look like, smell like, feel like? Do you have magical friends or guides there? Are there any special activities that can be done there, like cleansing your energy, calming your body/mind or just filling yourself with confidence and security?

This is your safe place and it is whatever you want it to be and it serves whatever purpose you want it to. You can come here whenever you wish. It’s your safe place and nothing can stop you from being there. Being able to mentally travel here is considered shapeshifting in some cultures, meditation in others and positive imagery or psychonavigation in the psychological world.

However you choose to look at it, know it’s there to serve you… give it love and gratitude… it will always be there for you

Connecting with Your Essence


It’s best to do this meditation lying down so you can really go deep.

Start with deep and slow breaths… in… and out… in… and out… in your mind’s eye see yourself walking through a field… smell the flowers, the grass, feel a gentle wind… the sun warming your face… breathe deeply and slowly… in… and out… you come upon a set of stairs and you begin to walk down them.

With every step you go deeper and deeper into relaxation… deeper into yourself… down another step… and another… you can see the bottom of the stairs now… breathing in… and out… once you are at the bottom you can sense a presence… it’s your essence and now you see it begin to take form… it could be you as a child or an element such as wind or fire… allow yourself to see your essence in whatever form it chooses to take at that moment… say hello… introduce yourself… ask if it has a message for you or ask it a specific question… allow yourself to just be with your essence and notice what thoughts or emotions come up. Thank your essence… if you like, you can invite it to have more of a presence in your conscious mind.

Begin to walk back up the stairs taking whatever information you have gathered with you. Breathing in… and out… up each stair you begin to come back into your body again… you can see the top of the stairs and the sunlight from the meadow creeping in. With every breath you are coming back into consciousness feeling relaxed yet energized. Breathing in… and out… you are now at the top of the stairs… step back into the warm and sunny meadow… you feel refreshed and begin to feel your body again… wriggle your toes and fingers… breathing in… and out… when you feel ready, open your eyes and continue to lie there quietly and reflect upon the information you have received from meeting your essence.

You may want to write the experience down or if in a group, sit in a circle and allow everyone to share.

Sending Yourself Positive Energy


Close your eyes, take a deep breath and turn your attention inward. Look back into the past and see yourself as you were – any age, any situation. With that vision in mind, send that past-self love and compassion. Your past is perfect… you feel deep love for yourself… you are surrounded with self love and inner strength. Breathe that in.

Clearing Negativity


Close your eyes, take a deep breath and turn your attention inward. In your mind’s eye see the person, situation or aspect of yourself that is causing you distress… and now see beautiful shimmering white light showering down around and through this object of distress. This light is clearing away all negativity… you can see shimmering light gently flowing through and clearing away any darkness, effortlessly creating harmony and love. You have let go of all unnecessary emotions… you feel positive and cleansed… you have created a positive change within yourself. Breathe that in.

Close your eyes, take a deep breath and turn your attention inward. Take another deep breath and hold your body tensely for a second or two and let the tension go as you exhale. In your mind’s eye, see a pink and green light, maybe blue… whatever feels right. See it washing in through the crown of your head, through your body… it softens all your muscles and calms the nerves… with every deep inhale you can see and feel your breath calming every cell. Every nerve ending is relaxing. Feel your consciousness peacefully sitting outside itself, observing. You are in a calm mind/body space. Breathe that in.

Feel healing light washing through you like shimmering snowflakes… let your mind’s eye travel through your body and find areas of darkness, heaviness or anywhere you sense something is off… direct the healing light to pay special attention here… take as much time as necessary… see each cell return to perfect health… see anything that doesn’t serve you disappearing or washing effortlessly out through your feet… the healing light is showering through you to settle into all your cells… all your organs are immersed in healing light… this light will stay with you and continue to vibrate perfect health… you are healed.

Finding answers through the world around you


This is a shamanistic technique, meaning you will be connecting to the earth and all her elements. Sit quietly, turn your attention inward and focus on a question. Then take this question and bring its energy outside yourself. Send it out to all that thee is… ask the trees, the wind, your guides… ask life force, ask mother earth and father universe, also called patchamama, to answer your question.

Be open to what and how the answer comes back to you. It could be a conversation between two strangers and at the moment you are passing by you hear exactly what you need to. You could see an advertisement that seems to speak to you (that actually happened to me)… it could be an internal voice, a dream… answers are everywhere, we just need to be open to seeing and hearing them.

Finding answers through your internal intelligence


Sit quietly on the floor cross-legged with a straight back. It is important for the spine to be straight because this is where much of our energy flows through our body. If you cannot sit comfortably in this position lie flat on the floor.

Breathe slowly in and out through your nose. Being noisy when breathing out is ok, go with it. Sit with the intention of asking your internal wisdom what you need to know. With every breath in you are taking in relaxation and with every breath out the tension is leaving your body. Breathe in slowly on a count of four… now hold… now out on the count of four… breath in relaxation… breathe out all the tension and negativity… you’re letting go of all your tension and breathing in joy and relaxation.

Breathe in silence for a few minutes then go deeper into a relaxed state where you can connect with your higher self and any inner feelings you may have repressed or ignored. Ask your higher self for help in reaching these inner feelings… it is safe to explore whatever feelings come up about a person, issue, emotion or memory… you’re going deeper inside yourself… with every breath you enter into a deeper state of relaxation… you are connected with your higher self… you are safe to explore hidden emotions… you are not judging your emotions, you are just looking at them… let yourself feel love for yourself… you are open to your internal wisdom, now ask it what you want to know… deep breaths in… and out… you are effortlessly understanding the messages your higher self wants you to know.

This information can come in any form -words, thoughts, a feeling… deeply inhale that truth and exhale any anxiety that may be attached to it… breathing in… and out… slowly coming back into an awakened consciousness… you feel refreshed, relaxed and open to exploring whatever issues, questions or answers that have come up. Sit quietly and reflect upon your experience. You may want to write it down. If this were a group mediation, it would be a nice idea to sit in a circle afterward and let everyone have their own uninterrupted time to share. You may have to go a couple of rounds, because it does take some warming-up before people feel comfortable to really open up. Make sure you have tissues and water close by.

Active Meditation

Active meditation or affirming what you want can include a mantra repeated over and over, such as Om, Love or Joy and it can include chanting. Just choose a word or phrase that feels right. There are no right or wrongs, only guidelines, so don’t get caught up in, am I doing this right, because if it feels good, it is good and I promise you, meditation will positively change your life and help you create the reality you want.

I’ve found the following a nice active visualization: Begin with the breath, but instead of hollowing out to no thought, visualize what you want in great detail. See it, feel it and believe it. Always start with deep breaths in… and out… see a movie screen in front of you. It is split in two. On the left side you see the situation as it is but on the right it is as you want it. See the ideal image on the right pushing the negative image out of the picture so that you are only left with the positive image.

Hum Sa Breath

I spent a week in Costa Rica at a retreat called Pura Vida. I love yoga, eco-adventures and healing retreats; they are always profound. But, my point is, that I had never worked with my breath the way I did that week and I have never felt the benefits as I did that week. It’s called Hum Sa because this is supposed to be the sacred sound our breath makes as we inhale (Hum) and exhale (Sa). As you are breathing in, imagine that your breath is actually filling your vessel. Breathe and feel the air going in through the top part of your nose and traveling down to the base of your spine. Let yourself fill up with air, filling up your stomach to the point where your chest fills up as well. Putting your right hand above your navel and the left on your chest might help you become accustomed to this new movement. Notice how full you can become. Before you begin the next inhalation, just as a metronome pauses before it reverses direction, slow down your rhythm for several seconds. When you reach this point in your breathing, it is as though time does not exist and you are fully in the present.

Then release the breath from the chest downward or, in other words, so that the hand on your chest deflates before the hand on your stomach area. Really exhale all the way out, allowing the toxins and carbon dioxide to flow out. This breath is heavier and you will feel it exiting through the bottom part of your nose. Let your thoughts pass by like clouds. Feel negativity and tension draining from you.

Focused, deep breathing helps transform the air we breathe into energy. The thoughts we have during our breathing exercises affect the vibrancy of the energy. Think happy thoughts and trust that you are doing it correctly and you will be doing it correctly.

Practice this in a quiet moment to get the flow and then start applying it in your daily life whenever you feel stress or fear.

3 breaths to changing behaviors

I sometimes call this anti-stress or re-patterning breathing. Once you train yourself to breathe deeply every time you feel stressed out, you will really see a change and have a greater awareness of how you hold your energy. For relaxation breathing to become instinctual, it takes practice and awareness. This is a good one to do discreetly when in a meeting, before you make a tough call, during a stressful conversation or anytime you feel crazy. You can do this anytime, anywhere.

Take a deep slow breath in… and out… in… and out… in… and out. I like to envision all tension, stress and negativity falling away with every exhale.

Cleansing The Heart Chakra


In order for us to walk forward and create positive change we must come from love and in order to do that we must clear our heart chakras and let go of old wounds. This visualization has always made us feel energetically lighter and is extremely effective.

Close your eyes, take a deep breath and turn your attention inward. See your heart as a flower about to bloom. The outside is green and the petals inside are pink and they begin to bloom one petal at a time…as each petal opens dust and dirt effortlessly falls out…it blows away with a gentle wind…another petal opens, more debris falls away…take as much time as you need to see each petal open and clear. As the flower blossoms the dirt falling out reveals a radiant glowing pink flower purified and cleared of all old emotions and energy…you have let go. Now invite loving presence to come into your heart…you are an open channel to the love and light and are bathed in that energy. You are new and ready to live in love. Breathe that in.

30 Second Slow Down


With your eyes closed and both feet on the floor, turn your attention inward… sit or stand up straight and take a deep breath in through your nose… and out… in… out… all tension is leaving your body… breathe in… and out… stress is melting away… you are calm… last deep and slow breath in… and out.

Pink Bubble


This great visualization technique created by Shakti Gawain is unbelievably powerful and is responsible for the success and creation of many things for many people. This effective visualization technique will help you manifest whatever you want. It’s best to be in nature but you can do this anywhere, on your own or with friends – just remember to believe.

  • Close your eyes and take a deep breath.
  • Visualize a big pink bubble floating just above your head.
  • Put what you want into the bubble.
  • See it, feel it and know it is true.
  • Say this or something better and release it.
  • See the bubble floating up into the sky; you’ve placed your order with the universe and so it is.

Remember not to get caught up in “am I doing this right” … a lot of people have a problem with visualizing colors or creating mental images and that’s fine. Just do it in words or intentions and it works just as well. It’s really the intention that is essential. A common question is how many things can be put into the bubble and the answer is, go for it. There is no limit, so put in as much as you like. The important part is to release it. Let it float away into the cosmos. Really let it go. How can something manifest itself if you are holding onto it?

If you think you’ve done a few bubbles on the same subject with no results, step back and make sure you’re not holding onto it. Or, maybe some emotional clearance has to happen. Sometimes our own emotional blockages prevent us from getting what we want.

10 Minute Practice

At the start of each meditation session, light some incense or ring a bell or singing bowl and give thanks to your higher power. Keep these things in your meditation space. Ritual can be a powerful tool.

Now sit in lotus position, with your back straight. Imagine a balloon on a string is gently pulling the crown of your head upward, straightening your spine and allowing an effortless flow of energy that creates balance and strength in the seven chakras that run from the base of your spine up to the crown of your head. Visualize the breath gently washing through your body, calming the nerves and releasing blocks… with every exhale see yourself expanding and opening… you are expanding into your limitless consciousness and every breath is expanding your awareness further away into space and into the serenity that exists there… you are opening to the healing love energy of the universe.

Now visualize your body hollowing out from head to toe. There is a deity called Vijisattva, whose name means emptying out. You can call upon this energy force if you are having a hard time letting go. If you have a busy mind, try relaxing your tongue. When your tongue is relaxed thoughts don’t form in a tangible way… don’t chase it, just be… thoughts come into your mind and effortlessly pass through. Sometimes we have a busy mind and that’s ok, just always come back to your breath.

Five Minute Centering


You can do this anytime and almost anywhere. Sit quietly with your eyes closed and deeply, slowly breathe in and out through your nose. In… and out… with every inhale you become calm… with every breath out you release tension and excess energy. Deep inhale in… and out… you are in a calm mind/body state… you sit comfortably inside yourself. Take a deep inhale in… bringing energy back into yourself… take a deep exhale out… release whatever you don’t need, from your muscles, from every cell… any negative emotions melt away… breathe in… and out… give yourself a moment and with one last deep breath, open your eyes.
